What does a choreographer do?

This is done by using various steps, patterns and movements that are put together to form a dance performance. Choreographers help to design routines for partners, solo performances or even for a large group in front of a live audience or for films or television. They help the participants with the training, exercising and getting them in shape for their performance. Most choreographers take a couple of sessions and have a fixed package based on the needs of the customer.

Most choreographers specialize in different forms of dance styles, so you should choose one according to your requirements and the type of dance form you are looking to learn.

choreographer types

  • Look for choreographer that can fulfill your needs, the most important being the dance form the individual specializes in. Be it a Punjabi wedding, Maharashtrian wedding or Bengali wedding, choose your choreographer according to the dance style that you would like to perform at your wedding.
  • Work out a schedule for practice and discuss your budget beforehand. Make sure you include all family members that will be participating in the performances in the decision to fix the practice timings.
  • Decide on the dance form you would like to learn and prepare a list of songs you would like to perform on.
  • Make a list of the number of dances that are going to be performed and the type of dances to avoid any confusion later. It is recommended to do so in the correct order of the performances to make things easier.
  • Keep the path of communication open and frank with your choreographer as well as all your relatives or friends that are involved. Don’t hesitate to state your concerns to your choreographer.
  • Keep a list of songs that will be required ready before hand in a pen drive or CD and assign a person who will be in charge of getting the songs to the DJ.
  • If you feel the requirement of any backup dancers, stage props or stage dancers, talk to your choreographer well in advance so the arrangements can be made as soon as possible.
  • If possible, keep a checklist handy of the day of the performances so that everything goes smoothly.
  • The ideal time to begin practicing for the Sangeet and wedding day performances is at least a month or a month and a half in advance so that everyone has ample amount of time to perfect their dances, however `it is ultimately up to you, your partner and your family to decide when to start practicing.
  • Always keep the choreographer in the loop in case of any change in the songs or if you would like to change anything in your dance routine.
