Licences and dry states
Alcohol is prohibited in Gujarat, Bihar, Nagaland and Mizoram, and in some districts elsewhere. In most other states, serving alcohol at a party in a venue needs a one-day or occasional licence; many banquets arrange this or charge corkage for outside liquor. Rules change, so check with your venue and the local excise office.
How we calculate
Each drinking guest has about 2 drinks in the first hour and 1 per hour after that, adjusted for light (0.6x) and heavy (1.5x) drinkers. Drinks are split across the liquors you choose using a typical Indian party mix (whisky-led). Spirits use 30 or 60 ml pegs, beer 330 ml servings, wine 150 ml glasses. Non-drinkers and children get soft drinks or mocktails. Costs are indicative retail ranges and vary by state.
